Imagine a cafe with a hut like feeling, bamboo, wood and tropical green surrounded by Bali’s palm trees. I personally love going to this cafe because of it’s buzzing atmosphere, it’s loving people but especially for it’s delicious vegan food. This menu is so vibrant and will make any non-vegan turn vegan in no-time.
What I get
My two ultimate favourite salads are both the ‘Veggie patch‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) and the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad (45k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie patch‘ is made with roasted pumpkin, beetroot, rucola, shallots, cashews and spinach. You can only imagine how many textures, flavours and colours make up the perfect summery salad. However, the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad is a must try. It consists of spinach, rucola, cabbage, tofu, tempe, carrot, coconut, cucumber, sprouts and tomato which is then topped off with a deliciously home-made peanut sauce. This is the ultimate Balinese salad, which is refreshing and bursting with flavours.
If I’m in for a real treat I usually get the ‘Veggielicious burrito‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) or the ‘Veggie burger‘ (50K Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie burger‘ consists of a home-made vegetable patty with fresh greens, slaw and tomato relish in a toasted wholewheat bun. I personally have tried many vegan burgers in the last years and I have to say that this is definitely one if the best ones, especially in Canggu.
At Betelnut Cafethey have the most delicious juices and smoothies. My favourite smoothie is one (which is a bit of a cheeky one) called the ‘Chunky Monkey‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). It’s made with banana, cashew butter, dates, flax seeds, muesli, ginseng, maca, cacao and coconut milk. Trust me, the cheekiest but best smoothie you’ll ever taste! Another smoothie that is absolutely delicious is called ‘Nutters‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). If you are a real nutty lover like I am you will love this one! It’s made with almond milk, cacao, dates, cashews, coconut, ginseng, maca and flax seeds – healthy, yummy and a real treat!
Where to go
Betelnut Cafeis open everyday from8am- 10pm and their address is Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.60 in Canggu.
Motion cafe has always been one of my favourite spots in Canggu. It’s a cafe in which you can relax and enjoy a coffee and a delicious breakfast early in the morning after a surf session, but you can also stroll up in your summer dress for a late night dinner.
Everything served here is 100% homemade and fresh. You can enjoy food that has been made without any refined sugars and if requested even gluten free. If that doesn’t sound healthy enough then let me just add the fact that their menu is only based on vegan, paleo, organic and whole foods – I mean, sounds pretty much like any healthy food lovers dream right? (Do you now get why it’s one of my favourite places?)
What I order
Everything on their menu is healthy and clean. For the people with a sweet tooth (like me) there are some yummy vegan cakes which aren’t only delicious but also healthy! Win win! I often just come to pick up an energy ball and I’m on my way again!
My favourite breakfast here is the ‘Home-made Granola‘ (57k Idr/ 3 Gbp). It consists of coconut yoghurt layered with apple sauce, granola and roasted almonds. They also make a pretty kick-ass ‘Acai green bowl‘ (85 Idr/ 4.40 Gbp) which is the perfect combination of green and fruity flavours.
For lunch I love a fresh salad in the Bali heat! The salads they make here are filling and full of flavours and textures. My two favourite salads are the ‘Vegan salad‘ (64k Idr/ 3.30 Gbp) and ‘Caramelised pumpkin‘ salad (70k Idr/ 3.60 Gbp). Both are the definition of tropical salads and the perfect meal!
My favourite evening meals are the ‘Black bean burger‘ (80k Idr/ 3 Gbp) and the ‘Chickpeas curry‘ (75k Idr/ 3.90 Gbp). They are both absolutely delicious and taste healthy and fresh.
A little tip, get the burger with their homemade fries! They are a healthy version of what usual fries look like, you’ll finish both the burger and the fries and you’ll still feel healthy! (Unlike most burgers) It’s an absolutely delicious meal and you can get your hands dirty! (Which is always the funnest part of eating a burger!)
As I mentioned before, they make homemade vegan and healthy cakes daily and I’m in love with their ‘Powerballs‘- the green one is super yummy!
When I come back from the gym I love to stop by and get a vegan protein shake. I have tried many vegan protein shakes and they never taste extremely yummy..( a bit like fish food really). But at Motion cafe they actually manage to make a delicious one! Motion cafe, you rule for making me love vegan protein again!
Where to go
Motion cafe is open every day from 7am – 10pm and it’s located on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.69B in Canggu.
The Secret Spot is definitely a little secret spot that you have to check out when you are in Canggu. As soon as you walk in you’ll notice it’s cosiness and the fresh atmosphere due to the green palms which are placed around the cafe. I personally love sitting outside on the roof terrace which allows you to have a look out over a lovely view while you’re drinking your coffee.
At this cafe you can always find a quiet spot to read a book in the corner or you can sit outside and enjoy the sun while playing the guitar. However, if you have a little bit of a sweet tooth then you’ll definitely fall in love with this place! The Secret Spot is specialised in frozen yoghurt! And oh my are they delicious! You can even personalise your frozen yoghurt by choosing any of the delicious toppings, so you can make it as healthy or naughty as you want.
What to have
I personally love coming for breakfast or to have a quick coffee or snack. They serve all kinds of delicious raw snacks and of course their frozen yoghurt is a lovely treat (for non-vegans). The coffee they serve here is absolutely delicious and that is why the non-vegans under us need to try the Affogato as it is out of this world. However, as I said the coffee here really is delicious and it’s definitely a good spot to come for a quick caffeine pickup!
For breakfast I personally love the Chia podwith mango compote topped with granola and strawberries. The mango compote is so refreshing as well as tangy and the granola gives a nice crunch to all the soft flavours and textures. Especially in Bali it’s amazing to start with a refreshing breakfast and this is perfect!
Where to go
The Secret Spotis open everyday from 8am-10pm and the address is Jl. Pantai Berawa no. 44 in Canggu.
So before heading out for a surf get yourself a delicious breakfast and a coffee at this secret spot so you’ll be ready to take on the waves!
Waking up with a freshly made smoothie bowl and a nutty coffee is all you want when you’re living the Bali life. And there is no better place to get a quiet spot at Jikaa on an early morning.
Jikaa is a lovely cafe that’s hidden in-between the rice fields in Canggu. Place yourself onto the comfy couch with a book in your hands and enjoy a quiet moment while the smell of freshly grounded coffee creeps up your nose. For me it’s these moments that make me smile from ear to ear and leaves me feeling mellow and happy. It’s the perfect place to get a quiet piece of mind and enjoy some peaceful time.
Personally I’m a huge coffee freak and I can honestly say that Jikaa has one of the best cappuccino’s in Canggu. The moment you walk in you can already smell the coffee beans, the sound of milk being steamed and cups clinking together fills the room and it automatically makes you crave a coffee. And these cravings are always rewarded with the most delicious cappuccino!
What to order
First things first, a delicious soya cappuccino! This coffee is perfect in strength and the milk doesn’t overpower the delicious coffee taste. After every sip you’ll notice the nutty after taste which gives it its unique flavour. Its soft, yet full of flavour.
The ‘Namaste’ smoothie bowl (48k Idr/ 2.50 Gbp) is one of my favourites and a must try for all the green lovers! It consists of spinach, kale, avocado, strawberry and banana and its topped with sea salt granola, dried coconut and mixed fruit. Its fruity, honest and absolutely delicious.
Where to go
Jikaa is open from Monday until Saturday from 7.30am – 5pm and it’s located on Jl. Pantai Berawa No.1a in Canggu, Bali.
It’s the perfect breakfast spot for any breakfast lover as well as a coffee freak like me!
The world has gone crazy for avocado and do you blame anyone for loving this smooth and healthy deliciousness! You may spread it on bread or even on your face or in your hair. Its one of natures gifts that we can use in so many ways and is good for so many things!
Here in Bali the avocados drop from the trees above you and so its no surprise that you’ll find avocado on so many menus in cafes and restaurants. However there is one cafe that overrules them all. Its Avocado Factory that does true to its name and has created a menu that includes avocado in every single dish. Here you’ll truly find yourself in avocado heaven.
I just love getting comfy in the laid back chairs as I take a sip of my coffee while overlooking the green rice fields. Its a beautiful spot and the perfect place to hang out and enjoy a breakfast or lunch.
As I mentioned before the menu is based on avocado, so anything your order automatically becomes delicious! The menu offers everything from avocado juices to avocado salads and ‘Avo Nasi Campur‘ – a traditional Balinese dish made with a twist.
My favourite juice to start the day with is the ‘Avo good day‘ juice (35k Idr/ 1.75 pounds), which consists of avocado, spinach, pineapple and mint. Its super refreshing and a little sweet while you still get all of the green goodness to give your body a great boost at the start of your day.
After my juice I always start my day with a coffee and as the owners of the cafe are Italian I would expect a killer coffee! And I must say that they have done their country proud! In the morning I usually get a soya cappuccino here. I do find it rather hard to get a nice coffee in Bali, but Avocado Factory is a really good spot!
For brunch I love getting the ‘Avo hummus‘ (60k Idr/3.10 pounds) which consists of avocado hummus and an avocado rose served on a mixed seed sourdough topped with crunchy chickpeas, green peas and red radish. Whats originally a delicious and simple dish is made a little more interesting with a little twist to add some extra crunchiness and flavours.
If I fancy a salad I usually go for the ‘Avo tofu salad‘ (65k Idr/3.40 pounds) or ‘Avo makes my hearth beat salad‘ (60k Idr/3.10 pounds). They are both super delicious and full of colour, flavour and textures!
Where to go
The Avocado Factory is open everyday from 7am – 11.30pm and you’ll find them in Canggu, North Kuta, Bali. Enjoy an amazing early breakfast as the perfect start of your day or end it with some avocado goodness for dinner! Im sure you’ll fall in love with this little piece of avocado heaven just as much as I did!

Who knew that a little piece of matcha paradise could be found just around the corner! This special cafe is located in Canggu and welcomes any matcha lover!
If you aren’t part of the matcha club yet lets get you informed a little about the great green power – and soon you will be part of the fan club!
Matcha is powdered Japanese green tea which has its very unique taste but also its very unique powers. This green powder is filled with antioxidants, in-fact it has seven times that of dark chocolate and sixty times that of spinach! It is also known to be an anti-ager, lowers LDL ‘bad’ cholesterol, supports weight loss, it detoxifies and its very high in fiber which stabilises blood sugar levels. It also consists of amino acid L-theanine, which combined with the naturel caffeine found in the powder creates a slow release of energy over the next 3-6 hours after consuming – unlike coffee which releases energy in more of kick form leaving you feel energised for about 1-1.30 hours.
If thats not enough to convince you let me tell you that it also tastes absolutely delicious! The powder can be used in many ways and forms creating the most tasty products.
And I know just the place for you to try all kind of matcha deliciousness! – Welcome to Matcha Cafe(or what I like to call Matcha Heaven!)
As soon as you set step into the cafe you notice the calm and fresh ambiance. Its location is beautiful as you are surrounded by green rice fields, which you overlook due to its open interior. The fresh white and matcha green interior gives a natural, bright and calm atmosphere.
They opened their doors only 6 weeks ago and is already one of the trendiest places in Canggu. The owner has a background in design and has an amazing eye for detail, which you notice not only in the interior but also in the menu and the presentation of the dishes. You automatically feel that you are in a place that serves clean and healthy products. The owner expressed that he wanted to have a small cafe that made you feel at home, and that is exactly the feeling you get. The owners character is reflected in the design and you can feel his energy and passion in the food.
With a slight breeze flowing through the cafe you sit comfortably in one of the seats awaiting to set eyes on their incredible menu.
The menu is definitely the most interesting one I have seen in any of the cafes I have visited so far in Canggu. From delicious smoothy bowls, matcha pancakes and matcha banana breadto matcha Gnocchi – thats right matcha GNOCCHI! – Definitely a must try!
The amazing thing is that most of their ingredients are sourced from local farms as well as being organic and home made. They also make their coconut milk fresh every morning – and that you can really taste.
You must try the Matcha Latte with coconut milk. I usually find that coconut milk sweetens your beverage overpowering the matcha flavour. But in this case no sweeteners are added so the milk is pure. Leaving you with the perfect latte which has a real matcha flavour.
As mentioned before the details that make up this cafe are incredible. Even the ceremonial tea is served in handmade cups and teapots crafted by locals. With hot water in one cup and matcha powder in the other you mix your matcha tea with a traditional bamboo whisk.
If you really want to taste the quality and delicious taste of the matcha you have to try this tea. The ritual of making the tea yourself adds to the experience and gives you the opportunity to personalise your drink as to whether you like it strong or weak.
The ‘Matcha Nutella Pancakes’ (60k Idr/ 3.30 gbp) are also a must try. They are gluten and dairy free but on request can also be made vegan. They are incredibly fluffy and full of flavour.
This plate is accompanied by delicious matcha ice-cream and the pancakes are drizzled with home-made healthy ‘Nutella’ – the ‘Nutella’ is made purely from hazelnuts and cacao, which gives a beautiful, raw and chocolatey delight to your pancake. Add a little granola to your spoonful for some crunchiness creating the perfect combination.
Another MUST try is their vegan ‘Matcha banana bread’. This banana bread is made with a special finishing touch! The bread is soft from the inside but as they toast it on both sides the outsides texture is deliciously crispy!
Best banana bread you will ever taste! It has a beautiful and comforting taste, served with a coconut cream and jam that will blow your mind.
A promotion that they have at the moment is one coffee/matcha latte + banana bread for only 50k Idr, which is about 2.80 gbp. – The perfect breakfast or snack!
A great feature that this cafe has is that they do not add any sugars – this brings out the natural taste of the matcha. I believe that in many places which serve matcha products unnecessarily sweeten the products to the point where the sweetness overrules the matcha flavour. But in Matcha Cafe’s products you don’t only benefit of the matcha goodness but you also get its real flavour.
However, next to serving top quality matcha they also serve top quality coffee. I have to be honest, as a coffee lover I enjoy a good espresso or cappuccino daily. But it has been difficult trying to find a really good coffee since my arrival in Canggu- one to come back for.
But not to worry fellow coffee lovers, because I found it! Matcha Cafe roasts their coffee in Indonesia and is freshly roasted twice a month. The difference between this coffee and the normal coffee you get in Bali is the fact that this coffee is a medium dark roast, unlike the light roast you get everywhere else. Making their coffee stand out as its full of flavour, bitter to the right point and most importantly NOT watery. Soon they will be selling their grounded coffee in bags so you can enjoy a delicious coffee at home!
They are open for you to enjoy a matcha rich breakfast and lunch, but soon they might keep their doors open in the evening too – who wouldn’t want a matcha infused dinner!
It’s definitely a place that you must visit when in Canggu. But honestly you can’t just visit once, you will be craving for more matcha goodness and find yourself back in no time! (I know I will)
So I can honestly say Matcha Cafe, WE LOVE YOU SO MATCHA!
They are open everyday from 7.30am – 4pm
Matcha Cafe is located in Canggu Berawa, Jl. Pantai Berawa No.99
