Monsieur Spoon – The cutest coffee spot

Monsieur Spoon is a bakery in the middle of Canggu with a French twist. Sometimes when you are far away from home it’s nice to have a little bit of a homely feeling. And what is a better way to get a taste of home then through food.

As soon as you enter the bakery you can smell the fresh coffee being made. Fresh croissants are taken out of the oven, and if you are lucky you might be in time to get a taste of their very special black croissants. Everything about this place will make you feel at home and it’s the ultimate spot to relax and take a break by enjoying a delicious cup of coffee.

What I like

I come here very often just for a cup of coffee. As a coffee freak I have been on a hunt for the best coffee in Canggu. I have tried many cafes and Monsieur Spoon is definitely in my top 3! I always order a ‘Cappuccino‘ with soya milk (35k Idr/ 1.80 Gbp). The coffee is fruity and strong. Also, most importantly it’s not at all bitter or watery – and that’s the way I like it! (And that’s the way it’s also supposed to be) So I can honestly say “This is one of my favourite coffee spots in the whole of Bali!”.

Breakfast

They also have delicious freshly made cold pressed juices which are full of vitamins and their ‘Green detox‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp) juice is amazing in the morning. However, when I’m at a French cafe I like to go for a traditional ‘Orange juice’ (30k Idr/ 1.60 Gbp) which is made out of 100% fresh and sweet oranges.  If you are staying for breakfast then you might as well have the ‘Avocado Bruschetta‘ (55k Idr/ 2.90 Gbp) which is a chunky piece of bread with smashed avocado, cherry tomatoes and topped with coriander – healthy, delicious and a great way to start the day!

Lunch

For lunch I love getting the ‘Gazpacho‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). It’s made with fresh tomatoes and served with chunky bread. It’s extremely refreshing which is perfect for on those hot Bali days.

However, what I mostly do is grab a cappuccino and some of their delicious freshly made bread and be on my way home! The bread is made daily and is a real treat for a breakfast lover like me!

Where to go

Monsieur Spoon is located on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.55 in Canggu and it’s open everyday from 6.30 am- 9pm.

Cheeky smoothies and vegan deliciousness at Betelnut Cafe

Imagine a cafe with a hut like feeling, bamboo, wood and tropical green surrounded by Bali’s palm trees. I personally love going to this cafe because of it’s buzzing atmosphere, it’s loving people but especially for it’s delicious vegan food. This menu is so vibrant and will make any non-vegan turn vegan in no-time.

What I get

Lunch

My two ultimate favourite salads are both the ‘Veggie patch‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) and the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad (45k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie patch‘ is made with roasted pumpkin, beetroot, rucola, shallots, cashews and spinach. You can only imagine how many textures, flavours and colours make up the perfect summery salad. However, the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad is a must try. It consists of spinach, rucola, cabbage, tofu, tempe, carrot, coconut, cucumber, sprouts and tomato which is then topped off with a deliciously home-made peanut sauce. This is the ultimate Balinese salad, which is refreshing and bursting with flavours.

Dinner

If I’m in for a real treat I usually get the ‘Veggielicious burrito‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) or the ‘Veggie burger‘ (50K Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie burger‘ consists of a home-made vegetable patty with fresh greens, slaw and tomato relish in a toasted wholewheat bun. I personally have tried many vegan burgers in the last years and I have to say that this is definitely one if the best ones, especially in Canggu.

Snacks

At Betelnut Cafe they have the most delicious juices and smoothies. My favourite smoothie is one (which is a bit of a cheeky one) called the ‘Chunky Monkey‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). It’s made with banana, cashew butter, dates, flax seeds, muesli, ginseng, maca, cacao and coconut milk. Trust me, the cheekiest but best smoothie you’ll ever taste! Another smoothie that is absolutely delicious is called ‘Nutters‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). If you are a real nutty lover like I am you will love this one! It’s made with almond milk, cacao, dates, cashews, coconut, ginseng, maca and flax seeds – healthy, yummy and a real treat!

Where to go

Betelnut Cafe is open everyday from 8am- 10pm and their address is Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.60 in Canggu.

Motion Cafe: Healthy, lean and clean – my favourite spot in Canggu

Motion cafe has always been one of my favourite spots in Canggu. It’s a cafe in which you can relax and enjoy a coffee and a delicious breakfast early in the morning after a surf session, but you can also stroll up in your summer dress for a late night dinner.

Everything served here is 100% homemade and fresh. You can enjoy food that has been made without any refined sugars and if requested even gluten free. If that doesn’t sound healthy enough then let me just add the fact that their menu is only based on vegan, paleo, organic and whole foods – I mean, sounds pretty much like any healthy food lovers dream right? (Do you now get why it’s one of my favourite places?)

What I order

Everything on their menu is healthy and clean. For the people with a sweet tooth (like me) there are some yummy vegan cakes which aren’t only delicious but also healthy! Win win! I often just come to pick up an energy ball and I’m on my way again!

Breakfast

My favourite breakfast here is the ‘Home-made Granola‘ (57k Idr/ 3 Gbp). It consists of coconut yoghurt layered with apple sauce, granola and roasted almonds. They also make a pretty kick-ass ‘Acai green bowl‘ (85 Idr/ 4.40 Gbp) which is the perfect combination of green and fruity flavours.

Lunch

For lunch I love a fresh salad in the Bali heat! The salads they make here are filling and full of flavours and textures. My two favourite salads are the ‘Vegan salad‘ (64k Idr/ 3.30 Gbp) and ‘Caramelised pumpkin‘ salad (70k Idr/ 3.60 Gbp). Both are the definition of tropical salads and the perfect meal!

Dinner

My favourite evening meals are the ‘Black bean burger‘ (80k Idr/ 3 Gbp) and the ‘Chickpeas curry‘ (75k Idr/ 3.90 Gbp). They are both absolutely delicious and taste healthy and fresh.

A little tip, get the burger with their homemade fries! They are a healthy version of what usual fries look like, you’ll finish both the burger and the fries and you’ll still feel healthy! (Unlike most burgers) It’s an absolutely delicious meal and you can get your hands dirty! (Which is always the funnest part of eating a burger!)

Snack

As I mentioned before, they make homemade vegan and healthy cakes daily and I’m in love with their ‘Powerballs‘- the green one is super yummy!

When I come back from the gym I love to stop by and get a vegan protein shake. I have tried many vegan protein shakes and they never taste extremely yummy..( a bit like fish food really). But at Motion cafe they actually manage to make a delicious one! Motion cafe, you rule for making me love vegan protein again!

Where to go

Motion cafe is open every day from 7am – 10pm and it’s located on Jalan Pantai Batu Bolong No.69B in Canggu.

Ruko Cafe – relaxing brunch spot

In-between all the rice fields and palm trees you can find a little cafe named Ruko Cafe. I love coming here for a quick coffee in the morning or for a delicious brunch. On a typical hot Bali day you can enjoy sitting inside where its nice and cool while you can peak outside through the huge windows. The atmosphere in here is light, vibrant and buzzing but still has a calming energy. I also tend to use this cafe as a work spot on somedays when its not too busy!

What I have

I am in love with their menu. If I fancy something homely, honest and not too fancy then I love coming here for a salad, sandwich or breakfast bowl.

Lunch

My favourite sandwich is the ‘Go Green‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) which is a toastie with avocado, pesto and spinach. On a hot day it’s always nice to have a salad and the one I always order is the ‘Rainbow salad‘ (55k Idr/ 2.90 Gbp) This salad consist of avocado, sweet peas, carrot, mango, cashew, beetroot, radish, mixed greens, sesame seeds and topped with a citrus ginger tahini dressing – I mean, doesn’t that just sound like a plate from heaven?

Breakfast

For breakfast I love getting the ‘Acai bowl‘ (70k Idr/ 3.70 Gbp) and the ‘Fruit salad‘ (45k Idr/ 2.40 Gbp) which is a plate with coconut yoghurt topped with seasonal fruit and granola. Both are extremely refreshing and of course fruity, which I think is the perfect breakfast! Vibrant and exciting! But of course, my breakfast isn’t complete without a delicious cup of coffee! Ruko Cafe has great coffee which you can order with various different types of plant based milks. Im not too crazy about an espresso here, but they have yummy cappuccino!

They also have lots of freshly made juices and smoothies just to add to your super healthy breakfast or lunch!

Where to go

Ruko Cafe is open everyday from 7.30am – 4pm and their address is Jl. Pantai Berawa No.99 in Canggu.

Im sure you’ll love its atmosphere (and especially their menu) just as much as I do! Enjoy!

Getting lost in Bali’s Tegalalang Rice Terraces

When wondering through Bali its not hard to get lost in all its rice fields and terraces but there is one in particular that is a must to get lost in. The Tegalalang Rice terraces will leave you breathless from the moment you set eye upon it. As I walked down the hill more and more depth seemed to appear through the palms. The landscape is stunning and you can have the most amazing hike up the rice terraces.

The higher you get the more stunning the view becomes. From endless rice terraces and palm trees to getting lost in the jungle, you will absolute love the whole experience.

Tip:

When walking through the terraces you may get stopped a few times by locals claiming that you need to pay to continue walking through the fields. However this is not true, you don’t have to pay anything – they are just trying to get some money. The only time you will have to make a donation is at the first stop after about 5 min into your walk. Here you will find a barrier and someone asking you to pay a donation.

Also, the landscape is beautiful but very rocky and muddy at some points so make sure to wear some comfortable shoes.

How to find it

You can visit the Tegalalang rice terraces every day from 7am until 7pm and the address is Jalan Tegallalang, Tegallalang, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali. On a good day its only about a 15 min bike or car ride from Ubud centre (depending on traffic).

Where to go for dinner and cocktails on a Friday night in Ubud, Bali

Ubud is a lovely place and the centre comes alive at night. But due to the many different restaurants and cafes it gets quite hard to choose a perfect spot! So I decided to share a little tip and tell you what one of my favourite places is to go to on a Friday night!

Ready?

Espresso Martini MyWarung Ubud, Bali

Welcome to MyWarung! As soon as you walk in you will notice the great atmosphere! On any night of the week its seems to be buzzing and full with people enjoying good food and great cocktails. Nice and relaxing music in the background sets the right mood and laughter fills the room. Its a lovely place perfect for an evening with friends, a family dinner or even a date night! Its warm atmosphere and the kind people make you feel extremely comfortable.

Behind the bar they make delicious cocktails and some even with a little twist! The bar is open and placed in the middle of the restaurant so you can watch them make your very own cocktail, which creates quite a show!

MyWarung Spritz MyWarung Ubud, Bali

The ‘MyWarung Spritz’ (100k Idr) and ‘MyWarung Rujak Martini’ (100k Idr) are the specials that I got highly recommended. So I couldn’t resist and had to try them!

The ‘MyWarung Spritz’ was citrusy, summery, you could taste the red fruit, fresh but with a surprising slight sparkle which hits you first before any of the flavours kick in. The taste of alcohol is not very strong which makes it very pleasant to drink, even while you are eating. The flavours melt together nicely. Perfect hot summer day drink!

The ‘MyWarung Rujak Martini’ was extremely surprising and I have never tasted something like this before! It was fruity, orange, tangy. The moment you take your first sip its light, but hold up a second because another flavour is about to kick in! A burst of spiciness is about to take over! This drink is made with pineapple, cucumber, apple, triple 6, vodka, and then as the special ingredient.. Balinese chilli! Its extremely special and I am not surprised that this is their signature drink!

Roasted Pumpkin salad MyWarung Ubud, Bali

For dinner I decided to try the ‘Roasted Pumpkin’ salad (65k Idr) which is vegetarian but can also be made vegan! It was very light and fresh pear really gave the salad character. Pumpkin seeds were sprinkled on top which created an amazing texture!

For the non-vegetarians there is a special dish that you have to try! But this dish is not for the weak! ‘Nasi Babi Sambal Matah’ (85k Idr) is a traditional spicy Balinese dish! You will be thanking them for placing a large amount of white rice in the middle of the plate, because you are going to need it when your mouth is on fire! This plate is full of tangy, fresh, spicy and crunchy flavours and textures!

Nasi Babi Sambal Matah – MyWarung Ubud, Bali

A little tip – try the ‘Espresso Martini’ (100k Idr)! As you know I am a big coffee lover so this is definitely my favourite cocktail! Its extremely creamy, tasty, sweet and it does not have an overpowering alcohol flavour. (Which can be dangerous, this cocktail is so good that before you know it you will be falling of your chair!)

The staff is extremely friendly and always have a smile on their face! Great quality for the price you pay! Great place to impress someone by taking them out for a cocktail on a Friday or Saturday evening!

There are 4 different MyWarung restaurants in Bali and this one in Ubud is actually their newest one! But already it has a great atmosphere and it is considered to be a very trendy place!  If you want to know more about the 3 other locations click here!

MyWarung in Ubud is open from 11 am to 11pm

Their address is: No. 7 Galeria Menara Ubud, Jalan Raya Ubud, Gianyar, Bali 80571 Indonesia
