Cheeky smoothies and vegan deliciousness at Betelnut Cafe

Imagine a cafe with a hut like feeling, bamboo, wood and tropical green surrounded by Bali’s palm trees. I personally love going to this cafe because of it’s buzzing atmosphere, it’s loving people but especially for it’s delicious vegan food. This menu is so vibrant and will make any non-vegan turn vegan in no-time.

What I get

Lunch

My two ultimate favourite salads are both the ‘Veggie patch‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) and the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad (45k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie patch‘ is made with roasted pumpkin, beetroot, rucola, shallots, cashews and spinach. You can only imagine how many textures, flavours and colours make up the perfect summery salad. However, the ‘Raw Gado Gado‘ salad is a must try. It consists of spinach, rucola, cabbage, tofu, tempe, carrot, coconut, cucumber, sprouts and tomato which is then topped off with a deliciously home-made peanut sauce. This is the ultimate Balinese salad, which is refreshing and bursting with flavours.

Dinner

If I’m in for a real treat I usually get the ‘Veggielicious burrito‘ (50k Idr/ 2.60 Gbp) or the ‘Veggie burger‘ (50K Idr/ 2.60 Gbp). The ‘Veggie burger‘ consists of a home-made vegetable patty with fresh greens, slaw and tomato relish in a toasted wholewheat bun. I personally have tried many vegan burgers in the last years and I have to say that this is definitely one if the best ones, especially in Canggu.

Snacks

At Betelnut Cafe they have the most delicious juices and smoothies. My favourite smoothie is one (which is a bit of a cheeky one) called the ‘Chunky Monkey‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). It’s made with banana, cashew butter, dates, flax seeds, muesli, ginseng, maca, cacao and coconut milk. Trust me, the cheekiest but best smoothie you’ll ever taste! Another smoothie that is absolutely delicious is called ‘Nutters‘ (40k Idr/ 2.10 Gbp). If you are a real nutty lover like I am you will love this one! It’s made with almond milk, cacao, dates, cashews, coconut, ginseng, maca and flax seeds – healthy, yummy and a real treat!

Where to go

Betelnut Cafe is open everyday from 8am- 10pm and their address is Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong No.60 in Canggu.

Summery fennel and orange salad

Summer is on it’s way which means its time for smoothies, acai bowls and summery salads! I personally love the combination of fruit and vegetables in a dish as fruit makes even the most boring plate vibrant and exciting. Which is proven in this simple and delicious salad! Orange and fennel is the perfect combination of crunchy and juicy and gives an amazing texture and flavour. This is one of my favourite summer salads that you can whip up on any day!

Ingredients

  • 2 handfulls rucola
  • 2 large oranges
  • 1 large fennel
  • Olive oil
  • Balsamic vinegar
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Start by cutting the fennel in small pieces.
  2. Then peel and slice the orange in pieces (keep the juice that spills from the orange, it’s great to drizzle on top of your salad at the end).
  3. Get two big hands full of rucola and place it in a big bowl.
  4. Equally sprinkle both the pieces of fennel and orange on top.
  5. Drizzle the extra orange juice you had kept from earlier over the salad.
  6. Also drizzle some olive oil and balsamic vinegar on top and season with some salt and pepper.

Toss everything up and you’ve got yourself a deliciously fresh salad in no time! Bon appétit!

Live music and vegan pizza at Milk & Madu

For an evening full of delicious food, great vibes and live music you have to go to Milk & Madu! Not only do they have an interesting menu full of deliciousness, their restaurant is  just overall a great place to hang out – in the day and in the evening. Everyday from 6pm on there will be live music and its always buzzing with people creating an amazing atmosphere.

With a play hut in the garden children can be entertained while you are lounging in a comfortable couch. Sit down and relax with a margarita in one hand and a pizza margarita waiting for you in the oven! Which at the moment they have on offer every single day between 4-6pm, only 50k Idr (2.70 pounds) for a pizza margarita or a margarita cocktail! I mean, talking about how to brighten up your Tuesday!

I absolute love the pizza they make here. They use a lava stone pizza oven and their pizza’s are definitely something special. However, unless you order a pizza Marinara the pizza they have on the menu is definitely not the traditional pizza you would get in Italy. The vegan pizza’s are full of flavour and texture due to its large variety of toppings. Which create a plate full of deliciousness.

‘Pumpkin pie’ pizza – Milk & Madu

My favourite pizza’s are ‘Greenpeace’ (139k Idr, 7.60 pounds) and ‘Pumpkin pie’ (119k Idr, 6 pounds). On the menu these pizza’s are not vegan but simply ask and it will be made for you just how you like it!

The ‘Greenpeace’ pizza is topped with fresh tomato sauce, spinach, kale, olives, roasted red onion and garlic. The roasted red onion has a delicious caramelised flavour and the black olives have a strong taste and perfect texture. The garlic flavour combines itself with the spinach making all the flavours stand out but are complimenting each other at the same time.

The ‘Pumpkin pie’ pizza is topped with fresh tomato sauce, roasted pumpkin, roasted red onion and fresh rocket. The roasted pumpkin is deliciously soft and adding real texture to the crunchy pizza. The pizza base is thin and soft from the inside but extremely crunchy from the outside. Personally I prefer Napolitano pizza’s, which are thin and crispy – just like this one!

Next to pizza’s they also serve all kind of delicious other meals such as salads, pasta’s, sandwiches, sharing plates and smoothie bowls. Enjoy a delicious smoothie bowl for breakfast, a fresh salad for lunch and a crunchy pizza for dinner!

Milk & Madu has a little fun everyday in which you can join in! At the moment they have the following promotions, which you should definitely give a try!

Daily 4-6pm – Margarita Margarita Special!

50k Idr Margaritas and Margarita pizza’s.

Every Tuesday – Cheap Tuesday!

From 5pm until closing pizza’s will be 2 for the price of 1.

Every Sunday – All you can eat pizza

All you can eat pizza for only 150k Idr (8.20 pounds).

I mean, the perfect Sunday funday right?!

Brunch and tropical vibes at Sprout, Bali

I am the biggest salad lover. And being vegan it is always fun to mix up your salad with some colour, different flavours, proteins, textures and even some wow factor ingredients that really stand out! This is why I absolutely love going to Sprout as here they have a large menu, with lots of vibrant salads! But the best thing is, for someone like me I am extremely indecisive. Yep, the worst. But here I wont stare at the menu for an hour as at Sprout you can choose up to 3 different salads and they will combine all of them on one plate! Problem solved!

Sprout is a cosy cafe with a real tropical vibe. You walk through the arch onto the terrace where you can sit underneath the green treas. With an occasional leaf falling on your table you feel comfortable in the shade – escaping from Bali’s heat.

The menu is extremely vibrant and everything sounds absolutely delicious. Order a cold fresh coconut or one of my favourite drinks named ‘Shearwater’ (38k Idr/ 2 pounds)  This smoothie is made with watermelon, coconut, mint and chia seeds. Giving it a really fresh taste – perfect for a hot day!

However, the reason why I love coming here is for the salads. You can choose from a vibrant selection such as ‘couscous salad’ , ‘kale and chickpea falafel salad’, ‘lentil salad’, ‘raw veggie salad’ and many more! Create your own plate and indulge yourself into its deliciousness! A mixed salad plate only costs 75 Idr (4 pounds) and you’ll find that its a great portion, perfect for lunch!

There are lots more different delicious dishes on the menu such as a ‘kimchi quinoa bowl’ or ‘buckwheat pancakes’. The more you read the more indecisive you get! Everything sounds and looks delicious.

Sprout has a relaxing vibe, great food and you can even buy delicious cakes, biscuits and bread to take away! Its the perfect place to keep in mind whenever you fancy a quick bite, a delicious filling salad or when you need some essentials or ingredients to take home with you!

Im sure you’ll fall in love with this place and its food just as much as I did! Enjoy!

Sprout is open from 7am until 6pm.

Its located on Jl. Raya Semat No.18, Canggu, Bali.

Why Geneva is the perfect place to spend Christmas.

Its that crunching sound you hear while walking through dry snow. The cold air that creeps up your nose and stings a little. The smell of trees, mountains and wood that flows through the air. Its those exact things that I love from the winter. Walking through the cold streets,  people holding a hot cup of coffee to keep their hands warm. The big jumpers and big scarfs that cover your face but always tend to slowly move down and leave your nose to freeze. When you open the door and make your way inside you can smell the scent of hot chocolate as you warm your hands next to the fireplace. Its those moments that leave me feeling in pure happiness.

We made our way from the white beach to the white mountains a few days ago. A special occasion left us on a plane straight from Bali to Italy! There we started our road trip with as our next destination Geneva!

Through the snowy hills, the green woods and over icy water we made our way. When arriving in Geneva you will notice the amazing atmosphere. The Christmas feeling takes over as coloured lights light up the streets. On every corner you will find the cosiest cafes full with people warming up their cold hands with a hot coffee and a slice of cake that Geneva is so famous for. I believe it is the perfect location to spend your Christmas holiday with your family, your friends or your loved one. You walk through the beautiful streets as you look over the lake with the snowy mountains in the background, the view is incredible. White swans take over the lake and create the most beautiful image. Its a fairytale city that creates the perfect Christmas atmosphere.

If you are looking for a place with delicious food and a great atmosphere then I definitely recommend you to visit Chez Philippe.

Its a beautiful restaurant with the most amazing service as well as the most delicious food. Its perfect for a great lunch, dinner or a special occasion!

I ordered the roasted rainbow beets salad with ginger which was absolutely delicious. Beautiful colours took over the plate creating a little piece of art. Fresh flavours where combined with the zingy flavour of ginger. Creating an explosion of flavour in every spoonful.

For a wintery soup that will warm you up you have to order the squash soup with pumpkin seeds. Its very creamy and full of flavour. A perfect cosy and warming meal for those cold days!
