I have discovered the new African SUPERFRUIT – why and how we should add this to our diets

Breakfast, the most important and the best meal of the day! Starting the morning with a cup of coffee is for me a must, however straight after I will be making my breakfast which usually consist of a smoothie, porridge, or on an extra good day some delicious pancakes! However, I now add something to my morning routine that makes my mornings even better! Il add a spoon of Aduna‘s Baobab super fruit powder to my breakfast and I’ve got all the vitamins I need to start the day.

Let me tell you about Africa’s super fruit which is named ‘Tree of Life’. Baobab is a fruit that has an extremely high dosage of Vitamin C and fibre, which helps aid in your overall health. Aduna is a brand that works with rural communities to harvest and process Baobab in Africa, which helps create sustainable livelihoods for hundreds of households. I am genuinely impressed by the difference they make in the African community while creating such an amazing product.

Superfruit powder

Baobab powder has a subtle sweet and tangy flavour which goes perfectly in any smoothie or mix it in your porridge, yoghurt or in a dressing to drizzle over your salad. When I’m in a hurry I also often just mix it into a bottle of water and have an energy boost on the go or when I’m going for a work out.

Superfruit energy bars

I often have Aduna‘s ‘Super fruit energy bars’ on the go and they are my absolute favourite. The Baobab energy bar has a sweet and tangy flavour and is perfect for a snack or as a pre workout before working out.

But why is it so important to be adding this super fruit to our diets? Well, here are a few of the health benefits this fruit offers. So you can see for yourself why everyone should be adding this to their daily diets.

Health benefits

1. High in Vitamin C

As I mentioned before baobab has a very high dosage of Vitamin C, which improves your immune system as well as aiding in a healthy and glowing looking skin. In fact, one serving of 2-3 teaspoons of Baobab powder has about 33% of your daily vitamin C requirement.

2. High in fibre

Baobab consist of almost 50% fibre, which aids in digestion and makes it a powerful prebiotic.

3. High in antioxidants

Baobab has twice the antioxidants than that of goji berries – its higher than any fruit making it the queen of antioxidants.

4. Improves blood sugar

Adunas Baobab Powder contains 34% soluble fibre. This helps slow down the release of sugars into your blood stream, which helps reduce energy spikes.

5. Helps improve absorption of iron

Your body needs Vitamin C to help absorb iron.

6. High in alkaline

Baobab is considered to have one of the highest levels of alkaline compared to other super foods. Alkaline helps to balance your body’s pH levels.

7. Pregnancy

Pregnant women are advised to consume 85mg of vitamin C everyday. Baobab has 26mg of vitamin C per one serving of 10 grams, which makes it perfect as a daily consumption. The vitamin is needed to help your baby grow during pregnancy as well as aiding in your own health.

8. High in prebiotic

The soluble fibers of the baobab fruit pulp are prebiotics.

How to get your own

Not only does it have amazing benefits for your body, it also tastes absolutely delicious! I definitely advise you to try the Baobab powder and if you work out or just like healthy snacks then you should also load up on the Baobab energy bars. I always keep a few in my bag for when I need an energy boast or just fancy some healthy deliciousness!

These are the vitamins and supplements you need to consume as a vegan

Being vegan on the road isn’t always simple. While travelling you might not always get all the nutrients and vitamins your body needs. You cant simply throw all kinds of greens and powders in your blender and make a super smoothie for a breakfast boost. Instead you will have to find supplements in different kinds of food. This might be a bit more difficult being in a different country, where you are not particularly familiar with its food.

I am currently in Bali where I experienced this exactly problem. But after lots of exploring, trying different things and having a nutritious and diverse diet I found myself feeling healthy and energised!

These are the nutrients that I made sure to have everyday, which if you want to live a healthy vegan lifestyle should do too!

Vitamin B12

Vitamine B12 is very important for your protein metabolism and the formation of oxygen-transporting red blood cells. It also plays a crucial role in the health of your nervous system.

Too little vitamin B12 can lead to anemia and nervous system damage, as well as infertility, bone disease and heart disease.

Where can I find it?

You can find it in plant based milks, soy products, breakfast cereals, nori, spirulina, chlorella and nutritional yeast.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps enhance the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from your gut. It also helps your immune function, mood, memory and supports muscle recovery.

Where can I find it?

Unfortunately there aren’t any products that are high in Vitamin D. The products that contain an amount of vitamin D are mushrooms, almond milk, soy milk and tofu. However, next to the small amount you can add to your diet Vitamin D can also be made through sun exposure. Just sit in the sun for about 15 min everyday and you are most likely to have made yourself enough vitamin D for the day!

Long-Chain Omega-3s

Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids play a structural role in your brain and eyes. It also plays an important role for your brain development and preventing inflammation, depression, breast cancer and ADHD.

Where can I find it?

Plants with a high ALA content include flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, hemp seeds and soybeans.

Getting enough iodine is crucial for healthy thyroid function, which controls your metabolism.

Where can I find it?

Iodine levels in plant foods depend on the iodine content of the soil. For instance, food grown close to the ocean tends to be higher in iodine.

The only foods considered to have consistently high iodine levels include iodized salt, seafood, seaweed.

Half a teaspoon (2.5 ml) of iodized salt is sufficient to meet your daily needs.

Iron is a nutrient used to make new DNA and red blood cells, as well as carry oxygen in the blood. It’s also needed for energy metabolism.

Where can I find it?

Vegans with a low iron intake should aim to eat more iron-rich foods, such as cruciferous vegetables, beans, peas, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Iron-fortified foods, such as cereals, enriched breads and some plant milks, can further help.

Also avoiding tea or coffee with meals and combining iron-rich foods with a source of vitamin C can help boost iron absorption.

Calcium is a mineral necessary for bone and teeth. It also plays a role in muscle function, nerve signaling and heart health.

Where can I find it?

Plant sources of calcium include bok choy, kale, mustard greens, turnip greens, watercress, broccoli, chickpeas, calcium-set tofu and fortified plant milks or juices.

Zinc is a mineral crucial for metabolism, immune function and the repair of body cells.

Where can I find it?

To maximize your intake, eat a variety of zinc-rich foods throughout the day. These include whole grains, wheat germ, tofu, sprouted breads, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Soaking nuts, seeds and legumes overnight, eating enough protein and consuming fermented foods such as tempeh and miso also seems to boost absorption.

Wherever you are you might have to go explore a little to find the right food but by knowing exactly what kind of products you are looking for it makes things a lot easier! Your body will be thanking you in the long term!

My one day Juice detox in Bali

Bali is the perfect place to get a break from your busy schedule. Its nature, the warm atmosphere and its fresh green colours set a magical mood. Lots of Indonesian flavours are to be discovered in the amazing dishes you can get on every corner for a dime. And trust me, just by walking in a cafe you will want to try every single dish just due to its smell.

By being here I learned how to appreciate food. We might have the luxury of enjoying a plate full of nutritional goodness but in the field in front you will look over people working in the hot sun cutting the rice plants that you are consuming at that exact moment. By experiencing this you learn that we don’t need 3 meals a day and snacks in-between. In fact, its much better for your body to have a ‘break’ once in a while.

Think about it, you spend your day either being hungry or digesting. Your body is continuously working, consuming and breaking down food. By giving your body no solid food your digestive system will be able to take a break, instead your body will start to concentrate on different things. Your body will start to clear out more and more toxins in your body as its not busy attacking any toxins through newly consumed food, which normally requires all of its energy. This might give you more energy, you might sleep better, feel sharper and it might clear your skin as excess inflammation in your skin is calmed by your body removing toxins.

Yep, I did my research. So I thought, why not give it a try!
Especially after the Christmas holidays I put my body through some serious food comas! And with the new year coming up you might want to get started on the right track! Lets give your body that little extra kick it deserves and start the year right!

I got my one-day juice detox from Motion Cafe.

They gave me a package with the following:

  • 1 bottle of coconut water
  • 1 bottle of Slim Tonic
  • 1 bottle of Turmeric boost
  • 1 bottle of green vegetable juice
  • 1 bottle of fruit juice
  • 2 teabags of herbal tea
  • 1 bag of Epsom salt

I consumed all of the bottles and plenty of water in-between. I have to say, every single drink was absolutely delicious and made the whole process a lot easier!

I started the day feeling hungry however after a glass of green juice I felt great! Throughout the day I felt energetic, happy and clean. Mentally I felt like I was giving my body a break, one that it deserved! But I was still giving it all the nutrients and vitamins it needs.

At the end of the day I started to feel very hungry, sadly that was the moment where I finished my last juice. I ended the day with plenty of water and a glass of warm water with a heaped table spoon of Epsom salt. Its doesn’t taste great but its worth the benefits!

For the people who are not sure about what Epsom salt is, its not actually a salt but magnesium sulphate. By drinking one heaped tablespoon in a warm glass of water you give your body a whole lot of goodness. Benefits include, releaving pain and muscle cramps, helps prevent harding of arteries and blood clots, releases stress and it eliminates toxins from your body. This is why its great to bathe in an Epsom salt bath once in a while. Simply add 2 cups of Epsom Salt to a warm bath and soak for at least 12 minutes.

The next morning I woke up feeling great. Energised, not hungry, my skin was clearer, I felt and looked good! My stomach felt flexible and looked defined. I didn’t have a tight feeling in my stomach that you would usually get when you don’t eat, but instead I felt great. I had an amazing sleep and felt ready for the day! Throughout the day I consumed both juices and some small portions of solid food, you don’t want to be eating anything greasy, spicy, high in caffeine or just overall too much food as this can really upset your stomach.

Even though it was hard at times I loved doing a one-day juice detox and I felt that my body both really needed it and benefited from it. If you are going to do a one-day detox I suggest you to join an official program and not just go juicing or grab any juice around town. I absolutely loved the program from Motion Cafe and highly suggest you to join it if you want to try it out or want to give your body a little extra care, especially after the Christmas holidays!

The ultimate chia jug at Satu Satu – the reason why I get so excited for breakfast in Bali

Waking up in Bali is never a bad way to start your day.. but to add a little more perfection to my morning routine I love a good cup of coffee. I am pretty sure I have developed a coffee addiction over time, but common, isn’t coffee the answer to everything? Stressed morning? Have a coffee. Happy morning? Celebrate with a coffee.

Apart from giving us that energy boost we need on a Monday morning it is also proven that one to two cups a day is actually very healthy! (Hallelujah!)

A few of these health benefits include that it may lower the risk of type 2 diabetes and cancer, the caffeine can help you burn fat, it protects the liver and it contains several important nutrients, including Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Manganese, Potassium, Magnesium and Niacin.

(If you are at this point of reading the article I will just give you a second to get yourself a coffee!)

However, with a good cup of coffee comes a yummy breakfast! The most important meal of the day! I am a big breakfast lover and so I love to try new places. But today I went to one of my favourite places for breakfast in Canggu, Satu Satu! I love their coffee and they make the most beautiful and delicious smoothie jugs! The chia smoothie jug is my favourite!

With our tummies satisfied and full we made our way to Old Man’s where they have a market every last Saturday of the month. They sell everything from organic granola, to beautiful jewellery, clothes and home-made cakes. There is a great atmosphere as you see surfers joining in the crowd after a surf session at the beach located a few meters away. Dogs are playing and suddenly appear rolling around from underneath the tables. The music is setting a happy vibe and people are making their way through the vibrant coloured clothes.

We made our way to the beach where we sat down and enjoyed the view of the waves being ridden by surfers. The heat was overwhelming and the sand burns your feet. So what’s better then getting cooled down by a cold fresh coconut! Lift your feet up and enjoy your Bali days!
