Even on a rainy day, I enjoy walking through this beautiful town. This time I am holding my cup of coffee tight, the wind is giving me shivers down my spine. As I am sitting safely underneath the parasol I watch people walk past, each and one of them in their own little world. People fascinate me, I think that is why I day dream so much. – It happens daily where I have some kind of awkward eye contact with a stranger after getting caught staring at them for what must of been quite a while.. I just wonder off, in my own little world, while thinking about everyone else’s little world.
When I returned to planet earth after my daily day dream session I joined the most French birthday party I have ever been to. As I arrived I got guided to the most beautiful secret garden, surrounded by palm trees and flowers. The tables where filled with countless cakes all home-made by the people that had gathered themselves in the garden enjoying their red wine and champagne. Rose peddles, candles, cheese, cake, wine, champagne all chattered over the table, it was the most beautiful mess I had ever seen. The sweet sound of laughter combined with the beauty of the french language created the most beautiful vibe. I now know one thing, the French know how to enjoy life. As I took a bite of my cake I heard someone say this in the background, “Take that extra sip of your wine, enjoy that piece of cake, tell your friends that you love them, because you never know what tomorrow might bring.” – So there you are, some wise advise for you from a true French man.
The key to happiness. Wouldn’t everyone like to find it. The thing is, everyone can, you just have to keep looking for it. When you lose your car key, do you just give up searching for it after a while? No, you keep going and move aside every object that stands in your way, until you finally find it. Everyone can find their key, but you will have to find it yourself. Only you know what this key looks like. Your key is original, differently shaped than others. So only you can find it.
I would like to think that I have a few keys. And one of them opens a door to the happiness I find in days like this. As I walk into the fresh garden, it smells of humid soil. The combination of this smell and the hot air already gives me a comforting feeling, putting a smile on my face. The dogs are already patiently waiting at the gate. – They too are excited to go for our morning coffee.
After fighting with the puppy over the last biscuit we decide to go back home and cool down by diving in the swimming pool. The heat makes you drowsy, the light makes everything look so green. The water is cool and the air hot. Even when the sun is starting to disappear in the sea, leaving the air painted in the most beautiful colours. It was the perfect moment to realise, this is the moment to end the day like a real French person would. We sat back down with a beautiful red wine and a selection of local cheese. With the warmth in our face, we enjoyed the smoothness and rich flavours of the French cheese, complimented by a sweet and light red wine. They were perfect together. It was as if the flavours made love the moment they were combined. As I said, I like to believe that I own many keys. And one of those keys, opened that door, a little piece of happiness.
Early mornings need many early coffee’s and yesterday was definitely one of those early mornings! With the suitcases in our hand we stroll around Fulham Road towards a little cafe named Muni. I will be forever in love with their coffee! If you have read my article about this amazing little cafe you will definitely understand why!
While taking the last sip of my coffee we stood up and got ourselves together to make our way to the airport. My next coffee was going to be in the country where espresso’s are a way of life, a holy grail that everyone gets a taste of every single day. Soon I would be drinking my coffee while overlooking the lake of Como and Lugano!
As the doors of the plane open you could feel the warmth on your skin. The air is tight and hot, how I have missed those summer nights. I’m glad to be spending my next few days breathing in the warm air, diving into the cold lake. Feeling the hot sun burn on your skin while eating the best home-made ice-cream in a small street next to the lake overlooking the boats as they go past.
Como is definitely a place to visit when you are in love with Italy as much as I am. It has the prettiest roads to get lost in. The best ice-cream places scattered all over the place. The most beautiful views as you eat your fresh pasta and finish with a delicious coffee. You can feel the vibe, the atmosphere is relaxed and flowing. The heat keeps everyone mellow. The coffee keeps everyone busy. The food keeps everyone happy. And the views keeps everyone smiling. Especially compared to London, I feel that people here live a much happier life. – But lets be honest, how could you not be happy here! London is beautiful don’t get me wrong, but people end up living a much more stressful life. (Even I got caught up in the lifestyle) When was the last time you didn’t had to risk your life by crossing the street? When was the last time you sat down with a pasta and a glass of wine and really, but really tasted every single bite and took your time to enjoy the flavours? In Italy you almost get pressured by the waiter to talk about how good your food really was, and if you didn’t finish your plate they ask “why?”, “did you not like it?”, “ARE YOU OK?” People really live in the moment. And I believe that this is extremely important in life. That is when you are at our happiest.
So for the next few days I will be exploring the different roads, the lakes, the cafes, everything that makes a true Italian happy. – And what will probably make me so happy that I will end up staying here. ( I could fit right in right? Blue eyes, caramel skin, dark hair, not too tall of length.. let me just put on my lace navy Dolce & Gabbana dress while I sip on my espresso and ill just secretly blend in..) Allora.. ciao tutti, a domani! Tanti Bacci!
Having spend most of my day with my face pressed against my computer screen again we thought it was time for pizza. Because, there is nothing that pizza and red wine can’t solve, nothing. And a pizza that will definitely solve all your problems is a pizza from Franco Manca in London. The sourdough is soft and airy, with that occasional crispy bite. The sweet tomato sauce giving you hints of garlic and oregano with every bite. This is the pizza Marinara, a pizza from the streets of Naples. A simple, old school pizza which is made with rich flavours. Because sometimes, less really is more.
As seen in the picture, I may or may not of been prepared for pizza today… – Yes, yes I do own a shirt saying “I feel like pizza” and yes I may have put it on knowing I was going to get pizza, but I mean… we all know #pizzaislife.
